To break the ice, we’ve listed the 5 most popular flowers for you, so you can always make the best choice to express your message even more clearly!
Rose
The celebrity among flowers! Known for its romance and classic form. In addition to the classic full rose you know, there is also the polyantha rose and the garden rose. The polyantha rose has multiple blooms on one stem, and the garden rose has a special “heart” (the center of the bloom) that has a different color from the rest of the petals.
Roses are grown year-round in the greenhouses of the Netherlands, Ecuador, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Red and white roses mainly come from Dutch greenhouses.
Color Guide: Each rose has its own symbolism. Here are a few:
- Red rose – represents love and respect
- White rose – represents love and purity
- Purple (lilac) rose – represents “love at first sight”
- Pink rose – represents happiness and gratitude
- Orange rose – represents sympathy and appreciation
- Yellow rose – represents solidarity
Peony
The peony is a flower that truly creates an experience. When freshly bought (or received), it is closed and in bud form. After a few days, it opens and develops into a very large bloom. This is one of the reasons the peony is known as a perfect wedding flower.
The peony grows in open fields and is available from November to August. From November to May, peonies come from Chile, Israel, and New Zealand. From late April to June, they come from Italy, Spain, and Germany. And in the months of June to August, they come from the Netherlands.
Why is the peony only available for a short time? There are two reasons:
- The peony requires cold and moist weather to grow.
- The peony grows on a peony shrub, which blooms only once a year. This means growers can harvest only a small number of peonies annually.
For these two reasons, beloved peonies are cultivated all over the world and are only available for a short period. Also read our blog (only in German language): Peonies, rose-like splendor without thorns.
Gerbera
Gerbera is grown in Dutch greenhouses and boasts about 600 different varieties in various color combinations. Quite impressive, isn’t it?
Plus, it's very low-maintenance. Tip: after two or three weeks, the stem may start to bend. That doesn’t mean the flower is gone! Trim the stem at the point where it bends and place the gerbera (now with a shorter stem) in a smaller vase or a glass. It also looks lovely that way!
Lily
With or without fragrance? Large or small? Pink or yellow? Or something in between? Yes, we’re talking about the lily. This classic flower is also grown in Dutch greenhouses and is thus available year-round.
Symbolism: femininity, purity, and transience.
Grower's care tip
Pollen stains? Gently remove them using a piece of tape.
Chrysanthemum
Want someone to enjoy your gift for a long time?
Chrysanthemum is the solution! It’s perhaps one of the strongest flowers available—lasting about four weeks on average! Additionally, there are hundreds of chrysanthemum varieties: cut flowers, houseplants, and garden plants. Grown in Dutch greenhouses, they’re especially easy to care for. Just trim a bit of the stem and place the chrysanthemum in a clean vase.
Did you know chrysanthemums were once seen as symbols of luck? And hey—a little luck never hurt anyone, right?
Carnation / Dianthus
A flower worthy of a museum thanks to its beautiful color combinations. Its petals are lush compared to its slender stem. The carnation is grown in Dutch greenhouses and is available year-round. Moreover, it stays beautiful for a long time and looks stunning—perfect if you're looking for something that lasts and stands out.
Symbolism: passion, desire, and romance.
